Skills Enhancement

The Club aims to provide timely and ongoing opportunities for Members to develop and enhance the skills and experienced required to participate in, and potentially plan and lead, safe, successful and enjoyable Club activities.

There are four key pillars of activities planned and coordinated by the Skills Enhancement Secretary:

  • Basic Skills - provided to Prospective Members on their pathway to qualify for Full Membership through mandatory attendance at a Basic Skills Workshop.  Basic Skills aims to achieve a basic level of proficiency in Navigation, First Aid and Bushcraft.
  • Advanced Skills - open to all Members and experienced Prospective Members to enhance their skills in navigation, first aid and group management. Includes a formal workshop and "themed" activities such as Nav 101, Rogaine, Navshield, Extreme Events, Big Guns & Young-uns, Provide First Aid (formerly Senior First Aid), Remote Area First Aid.
  • Leadership Skills - open to all Members who wish to develop or enhance skills to support leading day, overnight and multi-day walks (recommended, however not a prerequisite for walks leaders)
  • Specialised Activities Skills - open to all members wishing to learn and participate in a range of specialist activities offered by the club including Abseiling, Paddling and Cross Country Skiing.

In addition to the more formal Skills Activities Schedule, there are always the opportunities to develop your skills or simply practice on most walks conducted by the club. Simply purchase the relevant map for the walk, take your compass and ask the walk leader to create the opportunity for you to practice your navigation throughout the walk.
