Kelvin Russell

Kelvin at Wattle Ridge, setting off for Katoomba

Why do you bush walk?

I’m happier in the bush than in any other environment.

When did you join SBW?

2016. I’ve been bushwalking since my family took me on day hikes, and I was leading walks before I’d left school.

What's your favourite piece of gear in your pack and why?

My backpack: made by Summit Gear, no frame, no superfluous straps, and canvas.

My hat is a close second: I don’t know why everyone doesn’t wear an Akubra.

What is the average weight of your overnight pack, without water?

10-14kg, depending on length of trip and season.

What's one piece of advice you can offer new walkers that you wish you knew when you started?

Don’t buy equipment, borrow or pick it up on ebay. There’s no need for expensive kit unless you’re sure you will get substantial use out of it.

A memorable walk?

K2K (Kanangra to Katoomba). Days in the bush, proper wilderness, and reasonably challenging.

What kind of walks do you like?

2 or more days. Camping in a tent is an almost mandatory part of it. I would find it odd to go on a walk and not leave the track at any point.

What's on your walking wish list?

Mittagong to Katoomba. The Larapinta Trail (Alice Springs).
