Frances Bottrell

Frances leading a walk to Pantoneys Crown

Why do you bush walk?

It’s fun. I have always been quite active and to be able to combine being outside, active and sociable seems like a perfect combination. I would not necessarily consider myself an “outdorsey” type but I have come to really love the challenge and independence of backpacking somewhere you can only get to by foot.

When did you join SBW?

2012

What's your favourite piece of gear in your pack and why?

My favourite piece of gear would have to be my Smartphone. Does that count? GPS, Maps, Camera, Satellite/Star apps and best of all, I can read a book or watch a movie in my tent on overnight walks.

What is the average weight of your overnight pack, without water?

I used to totally freak out if my pack weighed anymore than 10kgs with water but nowadays....it may be 11-12kgs for an overnight walk.

What's one piece of advice you can offer new walkers that you wish you knew when you started?

Wet feet are not that bad and Bushmans is the only effective leech repellent.

A memorable walk?

There have been quite a few but my most recent memorable walk would have to be The Green Gully Track. A great mix of hills, ridges and creek walking, fantastic weather, company, and staying in huts along the way meant happy hour every night.

What kind of walks do you like?

I like long days walks, and I love weekends away and multiday walks. I don’t mind hills, scrambling or climbing but I do tend to avoid bush bashing. Not my fav thing to do.

Do you have a walks philosophy or motto?

Keep going.

What's on your walking wish list?

Everywhere! On my ultimate wish list would be a long distance thru hike like The Pacific Crest Trail....one day...sigh.

Any other passions/interests?
