Why do you bush walk?

Rejuvenation and the thrill of being in the outdoors.

When did you join SBW?

4-5 years ago.

What's your favourite piece of gear in your pack and why?

Depends on the situation, ie if a cold night my warm sleeping bag is invaluable. However, over the past several years I have been getting a lot of satisfaction from my Kovea Moonwalker gas stove – no more burnt meals cooked over the campfire, while if it’s raining you can easily cook in the tent vestibule!

What is the average weight of your overnight pack, without water?

If I can get down to 10-12kg I am feeling pretty good (noting I am aiming to trim this down in the future). Note: this weight is subject to variation depending on how much port is being carried in.

What's one piece of advice you can offer new walkers that you wish you knew when you started?

Enjoy the experience as much as possible and observe more experienced walkers to try and pick up ideas/gear that you can adopt for your next trip.

A memorable walk?

Anything in Ettrema, the Budawangs or Kanangra

What kind of walks do you like?

Usually something with a challenge, although walks at the other end of the scale, with time to appreciate the surroundings, are also very good.   Also, canyoning over the summer is hard to beat!

Do you have a walks philosophy or motto?

Enjoy the road less travelled.

What's on your walking wish list?

The bucket list never gets any shorter. In the short term a return to NZ (the 5 Passes walk is calling).  Long term some of the classic walks in the US and Europe need to be done.  While, generally, there’s always a new canyon (somewhere).

Any other passions/interests?

Photography, cycling, reading
