Why do you bush walk?

Why do I breathe? There are so many reasons, but mostly it makes me feel alive. It connects me to the things in life that are important to me. To friends, the wonder of nature, the ability to hit the pause button on urban life, to adventure, to discovery and my spiritual life

When did you join SBW?

Hmmmm. Was it 2000? I’ll need to check the dbase!

What's your favourite piece of gear in your pack and why?

Do I have to pick just one? My Macpac Supernova down jacket… but ask me in summer and I’ll tell you something different.

What is the average weight of your overnight pack, without water?

Probably 12 kgs without water.

What's one piece of advice you can offer new walkers that you wish you knew when you started?

When you wake up needing to pee in the night, just remember that the boogey man is not out there… just you getting your boogie on. Don’t hesitate. Get up, get out, get the deed done and get back into your bag. You’ll fall back asleep in no time.

A memorable walk?

So many! Mt Colong trip that I led and The Kimberley led by Rachel Grindlay.

What kind of walks do you like?

I like harder walks that offer variety - a bit of everything. Mixing up single track with rough off-track off-track exploratory, rock scrambling and finishing the day with a good stretch out on a firetrail. Exploratories that get my brain and navigation skills cooking, along with the sense of discovering something new.

Do you have a walks philosophy or motto?

This hill ain’t going to climb itself.

What's on your walking wish list?

Warrumbungles, Grampians, Hinchinbrook and more in QLD and southern VIC. Tassie’s South Coast track. Some GR walks in Europe and Croatia.

Any other passions/interests?

Inspiring others to fall in love with our wild places and bushwalking. Reading detective novels.
