How to join

Before you join, we encourage you to first come along to one of our New Members Information Nights. This especially applies if you haven't done much bushwalking before. There are many different sorts of bushwalking, and you'll have an opportunity to find out about Sydney Bush Walkers, and whether our activities are what you are looking for. The Information Nights also provide lots of info on what you need to know once you join, so even if you can't make one before you join, come along to one afterwards.

You first join as a Prospective Member for 12 months at the cost of only $55. You will receive the Quarterly Activity Program, Information Booklet and be added to the email distribution list.

Prospective Membership is a pathway toward Full Membership and provides an opportunity for you to get to know if bushwalking Sydney Bush Walkers style fits with your expectations. In your 12 months of Prospective Membership you need to complete a series of Qualifying activities to become a Full Member. The requirements to become a Full Member are to:

  • go on three Qualifying walks including at least one overnight walk; and
  • do a navigation, bushcraft and first aid familiarization (usually done as a one day workshop, or on activities).

Qualifying activities are marked with a “Q” in the program and are of an above average standard of difficulty. They typically include:

  • Approximately 6 hours walking excluding breaks per day (equates to 7.5 or 8 hours ie a full day in the bush) AND any one of the following in the course of the walk
    • About 2 hours walking off track (including rough footpads and well defined open ridges)
    • One or more climbs of 300 metres up a steep slope
    • At least 2km of rock hopping
    • Rock scrambling

Once you have done these activities, you can apply to be approved by the Committee as a Full Member.
